The district of Monte Canelas is located in the ancient, historical parish of Mexilhoeira Grande which is our local village just 4km away. Very much part of old Portugal, it has all local amenities including a small, but well stocked supermarket and an early morning fish market. Three very good, inexpensive restaurants are all within 2km of the house. Just 1km away at Alcalar, is a Neolithical burial ground 3500 yrs old with a fascinating insight into the history of the area. The old fishing village of Alvor, with its long sandy beach, little winding streets and many bars and restaurants is just 15 minutes drive away. Just 4km East of Alvor is the old town of Portimao, the nearest big town which sits on the estuary of the river Arade. The quayside is famous for its many fish restaurants. Many local boat owners are there to offer you some deep-sea fishing, or a leisurely boat trip along the coast and the river trip inland to the old Moorish city of Silves should not be missed. The narrow streets of the shopping area in Portimao are now all pedestrianised and a shopaholics delight. |

For the golfer in the family Penina, Palmares, Alto Clube and Golfe de Morgado are just a few of the excellent golf courses within an easy driving distance. Next to Portimão there are the beaches of Praia da Rocha, Praia do Vau and further in direction of Alvor, embedded in marvelous cliffs, Praia do Submarino. |

The national park "Costa Vicentina" is located along the Algarvian and Alentejanian coast on about 150 km between Vila do Bispo and Sines. This protected landscape is characterized by its unexplored countryside, the sea and the mountains join to an astonishing natural monument. The wild beauty of its almost deserted beaches and the high cliffs permanently hit by the sea, represent an unforgettable attraction of this region. The resident population is still practising the traditional fishing and agriculture activities. At Cap St Vincent (Cabo São Vicente) there is a huge lighthouse on what is the most southwesterly point of the European mainland which is particularly wild and barren. |
